[WSBAPT] May 1, 2025 - National Law Day of Action

Friends—This appears to be picking up steam and maybe even some additional media attention. I really encourage everyone to attend a Law Day ceremony and retake your oath.

A strong showing of our legal community to support the rule of law seems critical in these times. It isn’t just mutual reassurance for those of us who attend, but also an example to support those who are or will be in the federal power’s crosshairs. And it can serve also as social pressure to stiffen the spine of waverers who otherwise might decide to comply with an authoritarian demand “just this once.” But there is never just “once” with such a demand. We have to uphold rule of law and due process for all of us, or it cannot survive for any of us.

Hope to see many of you there!

Sincerely,

Eric

Subject: [WSBAPT] May 1, 2025 - National Law Day of Action

May 1st is a National Law Day of Action, and many lawyers nationwide are re-affirming their fidelity to rule of law by re-taking their oath of admission. In King County, there will be a ceremony at the downtown courthouse, before Judge Ketu Shah, at noon.

I just found out about this via KCBA, and was surprised to find my antisocial self not just wanting to attend, but genuinely looking forward to experiencing some unity of resolve with fellow lawyers.

I think we all need something to remind us of our duties to society at this foundational level. We are hardly samurai, but our oath means a lot, and taking it means that we have accepted solemn societal obligations. Until recently we didn’t have to think about them much. Or worry about them. But I do think we are called now.

I hope to see many of my colleagues at the Seattle ceremony on May 1. I really hope that colleagues in other counties will do the same. This is a national movement, and we would all benefit from a reaffirmation that our work as lawyers is predicated on maintaining, however imperfectly, a system of due process, fairness, and equality under the law.

For more information on the King County ceremony, see below. For the national effort, see:
https://lawdayofaction.org/retake-the-oath

I spent a few minutes reading other states’ oaths. I think Washington’s is one of the best, actually. But I’m undoubtedly biased.

I also contacted Christopher Bhang, one of our at-large Board of Governors, and learned that May 1 as “Law Day” is an annual event, and there are multiple events available on both sides of the Cascades. An RSVP is helpful so they can plan for an appropriate-sized space.

The ceremonies will take place in west side:
Bellingham
Seattle (downtown, both law schools, and juvenile court center)
Kent
Olympia
Kelso
Vancouver

and east side:
Colville
Spokane
Yakima
Kennewick

For everyone who has any concern about rule of law and the imminent risk of its destruction, please RSVP and attend one of these events. For myself, I want to see my fellow lawyers in person, to know that I am not alone in this. (I know I’m not, but acting in solidarity helps everyone maintain solidarity.)

See you then I hope! Post pics on social media!

Sincerely,

Eric

On Law Day, May 1st, we invite you to
join other lawyers across the USA and
retake your Attorney's Oath.

The local legal community is invited to King County Superior Court where Judge Ketu Shah
will lead the retaking of the oath.

  * Room E942, KC Superior Court, 516 Third Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104
  * Doors open at 11:45, Attorney's Oath at noon.
  * Participants are encouraged to mingle after the oath.

The principles of judicial independence and the independence of the legal profession – cornerstones of American democracy – are facing unprecedented challenges across the country. Attacks on judges for unpopular rulings, political pressure on legal professionals, and a growing distrust of the legal system threaten the very foundation of fairness and equal justice.

All lawyers make this pledge upon admission to the bar. The oath represents a promise to support the Constitution of the United States. It encompasses a duty to defend the Constitution, protect constitutional rights, ensure due process, and oppose laws or actions that undermine it. By retaking the oath, you reiterate your role as a guardian of the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.

This is not about specific cases or political outcomes. It's about protecting the process of justice. Lawyers across the USA will make the same pledge at the same time in a national affirmation of the rule of law.

Join us, and reiterate your commitment to the rule of law.
