[WSBAPT] Firearm transfer

Gun gurus, have a probate where decedent owned two AR15's and one SKS, all now classified as assault weapons that cannot be sold or transferred. Presently registered in name of decedent. Heir will keep the firearms. Do they just stay registered in the name of the decedent, or is there some other process required? Seems strange to me that the state would not at least want to know who presently had possession.

Thanks
