Apple absolutely requires a court order to gain access to a decedent's account. And it's not just any "court order". It has to be exactly the wording that Apple provides with no changes whatsoever.  The Uniform Access to Digital Assets Act means nothing to Apple.

If it would be helpful to you, I can provide a copy of the Motion and Order I had to have entered in order to gain access to a client's Apple ID account. Please let me know.

Hello all,

Does anyone know a way around opening a probate to obtain an order for a deceased person's next of kin to obtain records from that person's Icloud and Google accounts?  There was no power of attorney in effect before the person's death, and the Decedent was an adult.  For various reasons, they don't want to open a probate.

And, if there is a way to get around probate, how is such a request initiated; what sort of case needs to be filed?  This would be in King County.
