[WSBAPT] Referral - To Value and Perhaps Sell Coin Collection

I have discovered that when you get fine art or coins appraised without intent to sell and then go back to that appraiser to see if they will buy any of the items they appraised usually what they offer is less then their appraisal and when questioned they say my appraisal was for insurance value not what I would pay for it.

This raises an interesting (to me) question. On Antiques Roadshow, they teach us that a person who performs an appraisal should not offer to buy or be involved in a sale. For obvious ethical reasons.
Have appraisal associations adopted that as a written rule? Or is it just good practice? Do some appraisers flout that rule?

Kerry,
The below two gentlemen, John Konrad and George Marley, were co-PR's for a very lively probate in which I was involved a few years back. The estate owned an obscene amount of rare coins..... They were very knowledgeable and each had decades of experience in the industry. The decedent, also a coin dealer, had hand selected these two to serve as co-PR's because of their expertise. They weren't my clients, so I Googled them just now and here is what popped up.

John Konrad:

Greetings,

We need a referral to someone reputable that will value and perhaps purchase or sell on consignment a coin collection. Do you have someone you have worked with and can refer?

Thank you so much, in advance.

Best regards,
Kerry
