I stand corrected.  My staff does it, and I was wrong when I said that they said it is open to the public for free.  I am now told by my staff that one member of my staff has a paid Ancestry.com account, and that is how she does it.
I am always the last to know.

We use Washington State digital archives for death information in Washington..
The SSA death index is maintained by SSA and access is usable, as far as my last investigation could determine, only through paid sites like Ancestry or Genealogybank.com.
Obitsarchive.com has a site that requires an email address to access a record.
If anyone knows of a truly free access point I would like to know about it.

I’ve never used it.  My staff uses it all the time, and they say it is open to the public.  Try Googling Social Security Death Record or Social Security Death Index.
