I have used Zola for a little over 2 years for practice management, including accounting, and have been pleased with their continued improvement and refinement. It is web-based and has a very good iPhone app. Their timers are very good and have narrative boxes you can type into quickly “on the fly.” I prefer it over others because it has truly-integrated accounting (including receiving separate credit card payments to operating and trust, even though I don’t use that myself), so I don’t have to use QuickBooks or anything else. Others “link” to other services; Zola simply includes it, period.

For payroll, I have found Patriot Payroll’s full-service payroll to be outstanding. They handle all state and federal tax reporting (except only the new FMLA quarterly reports); my employees have a web-based time clock system; full direct deposit for no additional fee; and all W-2s etc. are electronic – and the annualized cost is a fraction of QuickBooks payroll.

It is time for me to invest in software for billing - hand tracking and then re-typing into an invoice is no longer the best use of time.

My prior life working for other firms had me work with a variety of different programs that were designed with larger firms in mind - but I am hoping to get recommendations for one that is easy to use (mobile friendly, if possible) and within a reasonable price for my current size.
