I had HeirSearch.com recently locate a missing heir for an estate. Total cost was about $800. They billed 5 hours at $165/hour. Case manager was very responsive by phone and e-mail. Required an upfront deposit for 10 hours (so $1,650 down), but they promptly refunded the balance once we confirmed that they found her. I think the difference between a genealogist and HeirSearch is that HeirSearch is prepared to submit a declaration for court if they cannot locate the heir using commercially reasonable methods.

I have found that hiring a genealogist is a very economical alternative to hiring an heir search service.  They normally work at reasonable hourly rates.  Down here in Oregon, many people recommend Leslie Lawson -  Lawsonresearch.net.  But she can probably help you wherever you are.  Or recommend someone else.
