Mr. Safren:

Thank you for your updates.

Question: Are non-WSBA members still allowed to join the RPPT and
participate in the listserv?

Thank you again Michael.

If I could stick my oar in on this, I personally think it is too bad that
this was the ultimate outcome--but I also completely understand the decision
as a difficult balance between the cost and administrative burden for the
section to handle "emeritus" members, versus the core mission of serving the
active members. Sometimes you have to pick a priority and let a potential
benefit go.

If I get off my lazy duff and participate more at the governance level, I
might at some point propose some means of allowing contributions to an
"honorary emeritus member" pool, that could be used to pay the section dues
for retired members who still want to participate. Lots of details to work
out, which is why I'm not proposing it now...

Sincerely,

Eric

Hello Listservers:

I received an inquiry about the decision to move the Listservs to a members
only model with respect to certain emeritus members such as retired
attorneys, law professors, and others.

The Executive Committee had a lengthy debate about creating some sort of
emeritus member status for the Listserves and ultimately decided not to
proceed in that direction. There were a multitude of reasons for this
decision.

First, the administration of such a process would be impractical. Creating
an emeritus status for just the Listservs would require a host of technical
changes to the login credentials to create a "Listserv only" login. Further
it would require a manual process of checking whether those requesting
emeritus status were members were in fact former members of the bar as well
as deciding which statuses (there is no emeritus status with WSBA) would
qualify for emeritus status. This process would grow exponentially as the
year go by and more and more practitioners continue to retire.

The Executive Committee was also concerned that granting emeritus status to
certain non-members could bring up questions of fairness over participation.
While a number of section members expressed their support for the emeritus
status, a number of members all expressed disapproval that non-members were
able to gain member benefits. Moreover, there is no ready criteria for
determining which Listserv participants qualified as emeritus and which did
not.

Lastly, the Executive Committee reasoned that emeritus members could still
participate in the Listserv simply by paying the $25 section membership
dues. Emeritus members would not need to pay full bar dues, only the RPPT
section member dues to be considered section members. While emeritus
members participation in the Listserv could help section members who use the
Listserv, the Executive Committee believes that the benefit of participating
in the Listserv also runs to the emeritus member, connecting them to the
world of active practitioners, and helping emeritus members stay engaged
with the practice of law.

I hope this helps to explain and clarify the Executive Committee's decision
on this point.

Kind regards,

Michael Safren

Michael, thank you for the information. How did the section leadership
decide how to handle the membership requirement for those individuals who
would be beneficial to the listservs, such as retired attorneys, senior
title officers, and law professors? Considering the many list-serv members
who chimed in that they wanted the listserv to retain such valuable listserv
members who are not members of the section, surely the section leadership
addressed the issue.

Hello Fellow Listservs:

I wanted to provide you all with an update on recent changes to the RPPT
Listservs (both the Probate and Trust and the Real Property Listservs).

The RPPT Executive Committee voted to move the Listservs from an open
subscriber model, where anyone could subscribe and participate in the
Listserv to a members only model, where only RPPT section members could
participate in the Listserv.

This transition will be accomplished via a two fold change. First, the
online resources to access the subscription email addresses, archives, and
Listserv guidelines, rules, and etiquette have all been moved behind the
member login page on the wsbarppt.com
<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwsbarppt.c
om&data=02%7C01%7C%7C11d0c8e40ee148e1d4e308d6ac2e2778%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435
aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636885711561184044&sdata=l1jhOgmQ9eJgcHS10t%2FkXkcgc8
6otozy8QYJixpb4d0%3D&reserved=0> website. This Listserv resources page can
be found by clicking on the For Members tab and require your RPPT login
credentials. This will prevent non-members from accessing the Listserv.

The second change will be to ask subscribers to re-validate their
subscription by going back to the Listserv page to re-subscribe, which will
require login credentials that only section members possess. Many of you
may have already received notices asking you to re-subscribe or to
re-validate your subscriptions. If you have not yet re-validated your
subscription, please keep an eye out for an upcoming message inviting you to
re-validate your subscription.

We hope that these changes will improve the Listerv experience for users and
that Listserv members will experience only minor disruption as we implement
these changes. If you experience any problems with the Listserv, please let
me know and I'll do my best to resolve any Listserv issues.

Kind regards,

Michael Safren
