I am not sure what county you are in, but here in King County I have never
heard of the Court appointing an "alternate" guardian while a guardian is
still serving. Generally a new guardian is appointed following the
resignation or death of the prior guardian, and it does not sound from your
email that your client is intending to resign right now. Your client can
name a standby guardian with a simple form filed with the court. I would
encourage your to read RCW 11.88.125:
https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=11.88.125

The form to designate a standby guardian can be found here under the 90-day
report section:
https://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/superior-court/ex-parte-probate/guardianship-forms.aspx.
Your county may have its own forms, or you can also check the Washington
Court pattern forms:
https://www.courts.wa.gov/forms/?fa=forms.contribute&formID=75

Guardianship has its intricacies like any other area, but it is fairly
accessible and there is a lot of information available through the courts
in order to make it easier for non-represented parties. I'd peruse RCW
11.88 and 11.92.
