[WSBAPT] Student loan co-signer

Apparently,  a grandfather co-signed a number of student loans for grandchildren before his recent death.   I think I remember that the debt of a student loan is extinguished upon the death of the student.  Does the same hold true of a co-signer?  Does it depend on the lender?  Any help appreciated.
