[WSBAPT] Approaches to "evening up" gifting and/or distributions where a beneficiary has received an advance

This issue seems to come up on a regular basis - either a parent wants to make sure that gifts to all children are equal and fair or there is a significant advance to one beneficiary many years earlier and the decedent wanted each beneficiary to ultimately receive an equal share. Is there some type of accounting made for the time value of money or not? Of course fairness is a subjective concept. Wondering what techniques or recommendations people have made in this regard.

Thanks for any tips.
