Thanks, Tara. I certainly wouldn't alter the will without the court's permission.

I'd be hesitant to actually alter the original in any way, although my outlook on the sanctity of original wills leans toward the over-zealous.

Perhaps you could file the original as a sealed document under a Sealed Financial Info Coversheet. And then also file (not under seal) a duplicate copy of the Will that has been redacted?

The commissioner might have an opinion or suggestion.

I never include personal identifiers in the wills that I prepare, but I've seen lots of wills that include SSNs and birthdates, not just of the testator, but also of the named heirs. This is bound to start coming up more often now that court records are accessible on the internet, so please share what you find out / end up doing.

Subject: [WSBAPT] Social security number in will

Dear listmates,

This is a new one for me. I am about to open a probate. The will includes the decedent's full social security number. My thought: I get the will stamped by the clerk, present my petition to the court with the will and ask permission of the commissioner to take a sharpie and black out the social security number before I file the will. Any other thoughts?
