Setareh,

All of your suggestions make sense.  So much so that the family has already checked banks near the home and near anything else the deceased usually did.  No bank statements show anything useful.  No will at all (unless it’s in the box).  No clues of anything!  I don’t have the key available, but when I do I’ll send it your way.

I have found that most people open the box at their primary bank and the branch they opened the account in the first place.

I am not aware of any way to tell what bank the key is from, however, I have seen enough of them that usually I can guess the bank (not always). Can you send a picture of the key or describe the tag? Is it round or square?

Was there an attorney involved in preparing wills etc? Often clients tell their attorneys where their safety deposit box is.

She should look through the bank statements, it's usually a one time annual charge for the box. That could give some information or insight.

If it has been a while, you might want to search here for unclaimed properties in case the bank turned it over to the state.
