Medicare sends out statements periodically (quarterly?). Go through the
decedent's mail to locate one.

Look for a Medicare card in the decedent's possessions (purse, wallet,
important papers). They are red, white and blue, and say Medicare Health
Insurance at the top. The card will state the coverages. Once you have the
number on the card, you can go to the various medical care providers and
request that their bills be submitted to Medicare.

If she had a medical services provider prior to illness - family doctor,
OBGYN, etc. - that offices should have her Medicare information and would
probably provide same to other providers as well as to her spouse, assuming
they were together as of the time of her death.

Subject: [WSBAPT] Off topic question

Client's wife passed away in 2014. Client is left with over $30,000 in
medical bills. We are trying to assist him in getting financial assistance
in paying those. One big question is what Medicare coverage the wife had
(Part A,B,C,D, etc.). According to Medicare, even the deceased spouse
cannot get coverage information without Letters Testamentary or the
equivalent. Has anyone found a workaround to find out Medicare coverage
information after the patient is deceased without LOT? There is no estate
to probate, therefore no LOT.
