[WSBAPT] Appointment of GAL to make health care decisions?

Inquiry from another attorney:

Potential client is long-time girlfriend of a man severely injured in an accident. They have been together about 8 years. He is in the hospital on support, non-responsive. He has no known living relatives. The hospital apparently has had the court appoint a GAL--an attorney--to make health care decisions for him. The girlfriend doesn't necessarily object to the decisions being made but would like to be appointed herself, rather than this attorney stranger.

Anyone familiar with this process, or best solution for the client to get appointed with sufficient authority to make health care and potentially end-of-life decisions?

Sincerely,

Eric C. Nelsen
