RCW 71.32 is the statute on Mental Health Advanced Directives

The KCBA GAL training handbooks touch on them a bit.

Some decent info and resources are available from the WA Hospital
Association

http://www.wsha.org/EOL-MentalHealth.cfm

There was a CLE by the KCBA way back in 1999 that covered Advanced
Directives for Psychiatric Care, which is outdated b/c it was before RCW
71.32 passed, but it did provide some great background information on the
issues and concerns that might still be helpful.

Subject: [WSBAPT] Mental Illness and POA

I have regularly utilized a durable power of attorney that covers financial
and medical issues. However, I have a situation where the principal suffers
from personality disorder among other mental illness diagnosis. I seem to
recall that some additional language to a POA is often recommended above and
beyond your typical medical authorizations contained in a POA. Anyone
provide me with further insight on this?
