Amy, 

Great question. I am interested to hear the answers from folks on this
question. My practice has been not to worry about releases unless I am
dangerously close to the threshold. For example, if we have an estate with
appraisals at DOD that render a taxable estate within 10% of the threshold
after any valuation discounts, then I get a release. In other words, if
within $200k of the state threshold or $500k of the federal. Can’t wait to
hear what others have to say – it will surely be instructive to all.

All,

I have two probates closing soon and neither reached the threshold for
state or federal estate tax although necessary final individual returns
were filed in both.

Do I need to get federal and state tax releases prior to closing the
estate?  I am not clear whether this is necessary and how to do this if
needed.
