I 594 exempted the transferee "of a firearm other than a pistol" from its provisions where the firearm was acquired by operation of law upon the death of the former owner. The transferee of a who acquires a pistol upon the death of the former owner, however, must either lawfully transfer it (i.e., through an FFL), or notify the Department of Licensing that "he or she is in possession of the pistol and intends to retain possession of the pistol, in compliance with all federal and state laws."

So, in theory, you can transfer a long gun without having to notify Department of Licensing, but not so a pistol (unless the transferee takes it to a FFL to effect a transfer).

I think that there is something in the recently (12/4/14) effective I 594 (or 591, whichever one passed) to that effect. S From: wsbapt-bounces at lists.wsbarppt.com [mailto:wsbapt-bounces at lists.wsbarppt.com] On Behalf Of Guardhi at aol.com

Subject: [WSBAPT] PR's duty re weapons of decedent It has been told to me that a PR is under a duty to notify department of licensing in Olympia of the existence, in an estate, of pistols and rifles. Is this true? Kenyon LuceTacoma, WA
