His caretakers thought he was feral, because he was too scared to allow human contact. When fed, he would steal a piece and run off to eat it. But Brandon is not feral.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Stray HELP (Healthcare & Education to Limit Population) in Fishkill assists colony caretakers to feed about 150 cats each day. It also trains homeowners and business owners how to properly care for free-roaming cats on their property, loans them equipment and coordinates a monthly low-cost spay/neuter clinic.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">“They are homeless, hungry, and as volunteers are finding, many are friendly,” said Ann LaGoy, president of Stray HELP.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">These friendlies are cats that once knew a home and are desperate for another. They are in the Cozy Cat Project, where the adoption fee is just $25.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Currently, there are seven Cozy Cats in foster homes that have been vetted and are ready to be adopted.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">“There are another dozen still living outside, waiting for their chance at a new life,” reported LaGoy. “No owners have been found. Each week, volunteers discover new cats, appropriately placed as Cozy Cats, and receive calls for help from community members regarding abandoned cats.”</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Brandon, a 10-year-old orange tabby and white cat, became a Cozy Cat on Thanksgiving.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">“Immediately after he was trapped,” said LaGoy, “Brandon began to cry. When his trapper reached her fingers through the trap bars, he leaned into them. For perhaps the first time in years, he felt the loving touch of a human.”</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Brandon had severe dental disease, tested positive for feline leukemia and had an open wound on his arm.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">“He has healed beautifully,” said LaGoy, “and his sweet, gentle nature shows in every interaction he now has.”</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Brandon is neutered, housebroken, OK with kids and is a gentle lap cat who loves to snuggle.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Toby is a 3-year-old tuxedo cat with a dog-like personality.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">“He follows his foster mom around like a love-struck puppy,” said LaGoy. “He’s silly, quiet and playful.”</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Toby is a big boy at 13 pounds and is neutered, housebroken and OK with kids. He is a sweet boy who loves to snuggle.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Destiny, a 1-year-old calico cat, is spayed, housebroken and OK with kids. She is friendly, energetic and showed up one day at a volunteer’s home.
