It would eliminate rules drawn under President Barack Obama that would require cars and light trucks to average about 54 miles per gallon by 2025. The Trump policy also attempts to take away the waiver granted to California and other states to set their own, more stringent standards; a change that the states are <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/17-states-d-c-sue-trump-administration-maintain-vehicle-fuel-n870531" class=" vilynx_listened" style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none; text-decoration: none;">fighting in court</a>.</span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.5rem 0px;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Trump appointees in the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency argue that the easing of standards will usher in an era of cheaper vehicles, while preserving U.S. manufacturing jobs. The premature death total of 299 annually would come under one predictive model, while another model suggests premature deaths would top out at 134 a year.</span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.5rem 0px;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The negative health outcomes could be overcome with other actions, like different emissions regulations or changes in consumer behavior, say toward buying more electric cars, the analysis says.
