    <p>I can imagine that one on a convertible in a Fourth of July

    <p>The first thing I noticed was the exclamation point, which is
      unavailable now, as far as I know.</p>
    <p>Were punctuation characters available, I would predict requests
      for ?, #, @, and $ right away, followed by others.</p>
    <p>Then I noticed that there are nine characters, counting the
      space.  Someone will claim that is too many, but there is a
      solution.</p>
    <p>LED license plates with digital displays.  The image of the
      regular state license plate would flash on the plate display every
      few seconds, with the rest of the time devoted to images,
      messages, and warnings selected by the driver.</p>
    <p>Aside from the few predictably rude messages from the driver
      ahead to the driver following, and the inevitable distraction
      messages, rude or not, would cause, there might be an advertising
      income opportunity should such display devices become sufficiently
      commonplace to warrant paying for ad space.</p>

                license plate</a>, but the USA turned that small, metal
              canvas into a bona fide art form. </p>

              Across the 50 states of our union, there are hundreds of
              unique plates, each one issued by the state and designed
              by committee. Considering the multitude of designs, there
              are bound to be some successes and some total
              failures—*cough, Virginia, cough*—so we've decided to rank
              all 50. Of course, states update their plates on a
              semi-regular basis, so there's hope for you yet, Texas.  </p>

              There's a time and a place for <a

              specialty plates, but c'mon, your sweet "Celtics" plate
              isn't helping anybody. We're keeping things simple and
              sticking with the standard-issue tags for each state.
              Sadly for D.C., taxation continues, as does a lack of
              representation on this list. </p>
