Mention of Neale Stadium prompted a memory of a two mile track race held on the track at this location on the U of I campus, when I ran as a Bear for Moscow High School in the later 1960s. I recall this especially, because of how damn exhausted I became during this race. Those old style cinder tracks were slippery and slow! Many of the track or cross country races I ran in those years for Moscow High I have forgotten completely. Those must have been the really good old days in Moscow! In
hometown downtown that summer there were two gas stations
side-by-side on the east side of Main Street, Texaco and Mobil, and
one on the west side, Exxon. Regular gas was 35 cents per gallon,
mileage was about 10 miles per gallon, and wages for a kid maxed out
at $1.25 per hour.
University semester fees were $105; room, board, and books extra.
Neale Stadium had wood bench seats in bleachers.
No, I didn't see the moon landing on TV. I was fixing car tires,
and walking to and from work.
