attended by unusually high air temperatures over the Arctic Ocean and a 
strong negative phase of the <a class="" title="Glossary" href="https://nsidc.org/cryosphere/glossary/term/arctic-oscillation">Arctic Oscillation</a>
 (AO) for the first three weeks of the month. Meanwhile in the 
Antarctic, this year’s extent was lower than average for January, in
