The negative media publicity we have received the past two weeks has been extremely frustrating and unsettling. First, we expect all athletic departmental personnel to interact with the media in a professional manner at all times. In no way will we ever condone any verbal outbursts toward the media. After offering media unlimited access to practices and scrimmages, we have now restricted media access to be in line with industry standards.<br /> <br />We will continue to hold our student-athletes to the highest level of accountability and I want you to know that the bookstore investigation was conducted without any influence on our part. This is consistent with how we approach all behavioral incidents involving any student-athlete. Any suggestion that the Department of Athletics influenced the outcome of any investigation in absolutely false. As an educational institution, we will use this opportunity to help these young men learn from their serious error in judgment and let the student code of conduct dictate the final outcome. In the meantime, the Department of Athletics has placed significant penalties on the individuals involved.<br /><br />I hope to see you Thursday night at our Tackle Cancer game against Ohio University. The position was made possible by a $2 million gift from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL). The gift from SEL came last month when the Pullman-based international electrical power systems company announced its support of the UI endowed chair within the College of Engineering's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "We are delighted that Brian Johnson is the first SEL Chair in Power Engineering," said Ed Schweitzer, SEL founder and president. The other is the late Mark Vaught, who passed away last fall and in whose name a scholarship has been established. His widow, Bailey, will present it to its first recipient - receiver Jacob Sannon. When Jace takes the field, you'll notice he has acquired a bit of an entourage for the game. Sports Illustrated is spending three days in Moscow documenting Jace's story.</span></div>
