Chris Tennant said the man was "mentally unstable" and police were contacted by people who knew the man who were worried about his well-being. Tennant said those same individuals told police the man had a history with firearms.</span></p><div class="encrypted-content" style="outline: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: none !important;"><p style="outline: 0px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; background-image: none; float: none !important;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The man allegedly refused to exit his hotel room when police asked him to come outside. Crisis negotiators from the Moscow Police Department were called to the scene and helped convince the man through a telephone conversation to exit the room.</span></p></div><div class="encrypted-content" style="outline: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: none !important;"><p style="outline: 0px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; background-image: none; float: none !important;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The man was taken into protective custody shortly after 4 p.m. He was transported to Pullman Regional Hospital for a mental evaluation.</span></p></div><div class="encrypted-content" style="outline: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: none !important;"><p style="outline: 0px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; background-image: none; float: none !important;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Tennant said the man is a former Moscow resident, but was most recently living in Montana. He said it's believed the man was back in the area to visit or stay family in Moscow. Police declined to release his name.</span></p></div><div class="encrypted-content" style="outline: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: none !important;"><p style="outline: 0px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; background-image: none; float: none !important;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Tennant said the SWAT team, which ordinarily wouldn't have been dispatched to such a situation, was called to the scene due to the man's alleged history with firearms, the potential for firearms in the hotel room and based on the man's mental state.</span></p><p style="outline: 0px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; background-image: none; float: none !important;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Hotel rooms surrounding the man's room were evacuated.</span></p></div></div><div><div class="encrypted-content" style="outline: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; float: none !important;"><p style="outline: 0px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; background-image: none; float: none !important;"><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Brandon Ward, who was working the front desk at the hotel when the incident occurred, said he never felt in danger.
