the Civil Right Act, with the support of Democrats and
Republicans. It's true that the majority of Southern Democrats
opposed the legislation. We can't and shouldn't pretend that's
not true. But here's an article looking at the vote from a

We also shouldn't forget Nixon's Southern Strategy, and it's
pretty clear that the former Dixiecrats have become Republicans.
Howiington isn't alone in taking the position below, but I never
see people taking that position talking about the post-Nixon
