Hi Deb/Hi Tom:
This picture reminded me of one I had seen decades ago in one of
my most cherished collections, The Family of Man: The
Greatest Photographic Exhibition of All Time (503 pictures
from 68 countries), created by Edward Steichen,
prologue by Carl Sandburg, published by the Museum of Modern Art,
575 Lexington Avenue, New York 22, N.Y., 1955 (notice there were
no zip-codes then!). It was a best seller at the time; a friend
gifted to me at my WSU graduation in 1962 (that is 1962, not
1862!). I am glad I have carried it with me wherever I went.
Good to browse through any time, but always evokes mixed emotions.
The collection is roughly divided into thematic sections--love,
marriage, family, children, farming, factories, races, weapons,
war, poverty, grief, human condition, hunger, starvation, etc. I
believe another edition with newer pictures reflecting the same
conditions is long overdue. There is change, but with constancy.
This particular picture (p.151) is in a section that begins with
the title, "For Mercy has a human heart, Pity a human face....."
(William Blake). Here is the page.
Should be at the UI library.
In friendship, always...
