“We are after freedom. That’s all we want,” says Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who refuses to pay fees for grazing his cattle on public land. For twenty-one years he’s refused. He owes over a million dollars to the US Bureau of Land Management, i.e. you and me, but, as he explains, “I don’t recognize the United States government as even existing." For two months in 1985, I didn’t recognize my landlord as existing, and I’m still trying to figure out how my futon ended up in the 42nd Avenue gutter.
<p>
The government that doesn’t exist began confiscating Bundy’s cattle this month, attracting a well-regulated militia of Minuteman nutballs to Bunkerville, NV (I’m NOT kidding) for an armed stand-off with the USBLM. They all want freedom too. Freedom, freedom, freedom. And no regulations, no rules, no restrictions. You know who else wants that? Two-year-olds. Two-year-olds make great Libertarians. Libertarians are two-year-olds with guns.
</p><p>
“That government governs best which governs least,” said Thomas Jefferson, or someone like him. I totally accept the truth of that, but I don’t accept the dumbed-down translation, “The less government, the better.” That’s the motto of so many of these states-rights, survivalist, I-got-mine, tea-bag knuckleheads. Cliven Bundy doesn’t recognize the United States because he sees himself as part of something bigger - HIMSELF. Here’s a picture of him…

My two latest releases are both DVDs. “Live From the Starving Ear” is a full show, shot live in front of a rip-roaring (and probably ripped) audience at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. This video is as close to a “greatest hits” collection as I’m likely to produce. It includes all my most-requested tunes - “Creation Science 101,” “To Be a Liberal,” “Defenders of Marriage”... AND the facial expressions that go with them.
</p><p>
“Vote Republican - a fifty-state musical odyssey” is a comedy travelogue 47,000 miles in the making. Melanie and I wrote a new verse to our song “Vote Rebublican” in every state we visited during our 2012 election year tour. I sang them, she shot them and we posted them to YouTube. This video combines all 51 verses with new music, road footage and countless jokes, but who’s counting?
