Shortly after he graduated from Notre Dame in the 1930's, he helped spread awareness for a new federal program called "Social Security."</span></div><div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br></span></div><div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Now at 101-years old, he is starting a bid to run for Congress.<br><br>Newman is challenging Rep. Vern Buchanan as a write-in candidate for Florida’s 16th Congressional District.<br><br>Newman says he is frustrated seeing a Congress that caters to special interests, and in his words, he "wants to see it work for the betterment of society."</span></div><div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br></span></div><div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">He would like to see an expansion in Medicare and he would like to see Congress figure out a way to make Social Security viable for future generations.<br><br>Newman is not ashamed of his age. He says he’s always been someone who gets things done.<br><br>Decades ago when he lived in Indiana, he had a daughter named Rita who was mentally disabled. He says at that time, there were few government programs to help children like her, so he began raising awareness and eventually his work led to newly created programs to help care for children with mental disabilities.<br><br>He says when he sees a problem, he feels it is his duty to help come up with a solution.<br><br>Newman feels his wealth of life experience makes him a great candidate for the office. And he is also hoping to generate publicity, to perhaps inspire others to stand up and make a difference for this country.
