I won't snip out such an awesomely iconic photograph, even to remind
of some mundane weather data.

On 24 December 1968 the temperatures reported at weather station
KPUW at the Pullman Airport were above average: minimum 35 and
maximum 39, versus average minimum 24 and maximum 35.

That Christmas Eve local residents probably did not expect the cold
weather that would arrive in the next week. Four days later the
minimum was down to 9 with the maximum at 32. The next day, the
29th, temperatures dropped to minimum minus 12, with maximum of 9.
The following day, the 30th, KPUW recorded a minimum of minus 32 and
a maximum of minus 5. The minus 32 set a low temperature record for
that day of the year that still stands. The following day, the 31st,
the low temperature of minus 30 also set a still-standing record for
the day of the year. The maximum temperature warmed to 3 above zero
before dropping to a more moderate minus 7 on New Year's Day, 1969,
and then warming to 16 degrees above zero during the day. So,
forty-five years ago, on Christmas Eve, the temperatures were
modestly above average, only to change to record-setting lows within
the week.
