Early teachers were often very young and did not generally make teaching a lifetime career, and if they did, they really were forbidden to marry in the small rural towns. I think they generally accepted that because the idea was they would teach until they found a husband, then they would quit, make a home and raise little students. When my mom married my dad in 1930 she either had to quit or teach without salary.
