November 20, 2012 (Moscow, Idaho) —
The City of Moscow announced the 2012 Service to Commission Awards at the November 15th Commissions Fair, held at City Hall. Awards were presented to Ken Nagy – Fair and Affordable Housing Commission, Ted Kisha – Parks and Recreation Commission,
and Lynn Ate – Human Rights Commission.

Each of these award winners was extremely deserving of the honor as their nominations stated:

Nagy, has served as a volunteer commissioner for the Fair and Affordable Housing Commission for 12 years, since the inception of his commission. Over that period of time, he has researched pertinent federal and
state regulations, practices, and examples that his commission can use to help residents of Moscow. This commissioner is known for his outreach to the University, local property owners and managers, State and Federal experts, and the general public.

According to the Jill Maxwell, the Commission Chair, Nagy is a reliable and dedicated Commission member and brings institutional knowledge that sets Moscow apart as a shining star statewide in the Commission’s
area of work. All are impressed by Nagy’s breadth of knowledge and dedication to helping people with disabilities, or who are low income, and others who may face challenges related to equitable treatment and access as relates to Fair Housing.

Kisha has served as a Parks and Recreation commission volunteer since 2004. In a jointly-signed letter of nomination, Commission Chair Tom Ivie and others described Kisha’s efforts as “relentless” and “selfless;”
his manner as “enthusiastic,” and “professional;” and his opinions as “informed,” even catalytic, inspiring others to become more involved. The Council liaison Walter Steed describes Kisha as tenacious and extraordinarily deserving.

Kisha was involved with the inception of the successful Hamilton Community Garden, noting his inspiration was a plot that he and his wife planted during graduate school, which provided them with food, as well
as “a way to meet neighbors, make new friends, and exchange ideas.”

Ate is noted as almost a fixture—perhaps, more a vision—at all sorts of community events. She brings a gentle and generous presence everywhere she goes. She has been a major contributor to ideas for social justice
forums, including introducing social justice education into area schools and engaging students in dialogue. She is integral to the planning and organization of the Martin Luther King Human Rights Breakfast, Moscow CommUNITY Walk, and the marvelous potluck
that follows in East City Park. Ate introduced the idea for a bookmark contest for area schools as part of activities associated with the annual CommUNITY Walk, featured not so long ago in Planning Magazine.

According to Human Right’s Commission Chair Ken Faunce, Ate “works tirelessly” and “has played a valuable role in making Moscow more inclusive, accepting, and congenial.” Her graciousness and generosity are evident
in her willingness to host—along with her husband--a gathering of human rights advocates every year. She is a supporter of the arts and the ways they can draw people together, whether cultural exchange through dance, or expressions of inclusivity and diversity
through children’s drawings on bookmarks.

The City of Moscow extends a heartfelt thank you to this year’s recipients of the Service to Commissions award. Their volunteerism and dedication to the cause are truly admirable.
