The tourist season is open. The Muni drivers aim for the curbs. The sun is shining on four square inches of Golden Gate Park. And the Starving Ear is back home in San Francisco for a run of four shows!

The Starving Ear is my not-so-subtle nod to the hungry i, the legendary nightclub of early-60’s North Beach. Mort Sahl, Tom Lehrer, Lenny Bruce, Nichols and May, Dick Gregory, the Kingston Trio, the Limeliters and many others shot to national prominence from that tiny stage and (not parenthetically) were a huge influence on the songs I carry around the country with me now.

Fridays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27, the Ear takes up residence in Macondray Hall, a favorite subterranean hangout at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 1187 Franklin Street. (The cross street is Geary, but the parking entrance is on Starr King.) All shows at 7:30, $18 or pay what you can. Please choose a Friday, don a skinny tie, and come take a look in my Ear.

I pause for a moment in a field of mustard on the Palouse, a fertile region of rolling hills in America’s Northwest lapping over the Washington border and encompassing Moscow, Idaho. I have a standing gig in Moscow. There’s a group of committed Progressives in this somewhat-less-than-Progressive place who call themselves the Intoleristas, and every summer solstice for four years now, they’ve invited me to headline their annual Intoleristas Wingding!

This year, the Intoleristas really had something to celebrate. They’d learned just the day before that their legal efforts and indefatigable street protests over many months had succeeded in stopping the stream of 100-ton megaloads of drilling equipment up bucolic Highway 95 on their way to the oil fields of Alberta. I like to think that a major reason for ExxonMobil/Imperial Oil’s surrender was this song: “The Idaho Department of Imperial Oil Transportation (IDIOT)” by Moscow’s own Jean McHale, a Wingding star in her own right.

(BTW, the group was dubbed the “Intoleristas” by an evangelical minister in Moscow by the name of Douglas Wilson who considers them to be “storm troopers of enforced diversity.” They wear the name with pride. Wilson was a sometime debater of Christopher Hitchens and co-author with him of “Is Christianity Good for the World?” Guess who took which side?)

Washington counts as State #47. So much for suspense. I’ll officially check off California and Florida in the weeks ahead, and if you allow a wink for Hawaii, that makes 50. Can I include the independent State of Jefferson, stretching roughly from Red Bluff, CA to Roseburg, OR?

...but if I had a vagina, I’d say “vagina” until the cows come.

By now you know that Michigan Representative Lisa Brown was silenced on the floor of the statehouse after an abortion debate in which she said, “I’m flattered you’re all so interested in my vagina, but no means no.” Republican Rep. Mike Callton said Brown's use of the word was "so offensive, I don't even want to say it in front of women.” But Mike, that’s where it IS.

Meanwhile, in the state whose name sounds most like Vagina, the legislature has passed that ridiculous “transvaginal probe” bill, and set their watches to Civil Rights Savings Time: you lose an hour and a hundred and fifty years. Melanie and I were in Norfolk when we put together this “Vote Republican - Virginia” video, one of the fifty new verses to “Vote Republican” we’ll be posting on the road to Tampa.
