<DIV><SPAN>SPRINGFIELD – Police arrested a 44-year-old Spring Street man at an East Columbus Avenue convenience store early Tuesday after he allegedly stole a police officer’s newly-purchased pack of gum. </SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN>Officers Matthew <SPAN id=misspell-2 class=mark>Longo</SPAN> and Darrin Fitzpatrick were just starting their shift shortly after midnight when they stopped at the Pride gasoline station at 1211 East Columbus Ave., Sgt. John M. Delaney said.</SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN><SPAN id=misspell-3 class=mark>Longo</SPAN> grabbed a bag of chips and a pack of Orbit Tropical Remix gum and as he paid for them the store’s female clerk whispered that a man inside the store was shoplifting items and putting them inside his pockets, Delaney, aide to Commissioner William J. <SPAN id=misspell-4 class=mark>Fitchet</SPAN>, said. </SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN>When <SPAN id=misspell-5 class=mark>Longo</SPAN> turned his back to
motion to his partner, the suspect quickly walked over and snatched the officer’s gum right off the counter, Delaney said.</SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN>The officers then looked at each other in disbelief as the suspected shoplifter walked out the door, Delaney said. </SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN><SPAN id=misspell-6 class=mark>Longo</SPAN> and Fitzpatrick followed the suspect outside and he then attempted to dump an apple, a banana, eight packets of Cabot cheese and a bag of sunflower seeds. </SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN><SPAN id=misspell-7 class=mark>Denie</SPAN> <SPAN id=misspell-8 class=mark>Irizary</SPAN> of 41 Spring St. was charged with shoplifting and possession illegal prescription drugs. </SPAN><BR><SPAN></SPAN><BR><SPAN><SPAN id=misspell-9 class=mark>Longo</SPAN> recovered his pack of gum but had to buy a new one because the former was tagged as evidence along with the other recovered items, Delaney
