Wilson, I think, was ordained in a very small Presbyterian denomination that later had problems with his doctrinal practices, what we now know as the Federal Vision. Now he's ordained in the CREC, the Confederation of Reformed Evangelical Churches, which he and a few cohorts began after other Reformed denominations found their theology at odds with Reformed or any other Christian expression of the Gospel. (The "Confederation" may have been changed in 2011 to "Conference" or something else, because of what he once referred to as people's liberal-inspired discomfort with words like "Confederation"). He is a CREC teaching pastor who oversees two local CREC congregations, Christ Church and Trinity Reformed Church; the CREC has around two dozen, perhaps more, congregations, all of whose pastors are either Greyfriars/NSA grads or otherwise educated in Wilsonian theology. <br><br>And I would disagree with Art Deco that Phelps and Wilson are both bona-fide Calvinists. Phelps, whose theology is straightforward fundamentalist, is interested not just in hating gay people, which he does well, but also, he says, in "saving souls," at which he's, ummmmm, a little less than effective. Like most fundamentalists and Baptists, he would likely say he's a four- or five-point Calvinist, but that declaration is commonly one defined by evangelical paraphrasers of Calvin's essential TULIP, while Calvinists use a strict, uncompromising definition for each of the five points that would be horrifying, frankly, to most soul-winning Baptist types if they examined it in depth. The five points of Calvinism (TULIP is the acronym) must be defined by Calvinist theological writings and not by misguided attempts by evangelicals and fundamentalists who think, for example, that "Perseverance of the saints" in Calvinism is the same as the "once saved, always saved" doctrine of eternal security. It's not, regardless of what the Baptist Calvinist-wannabe believes.<br><br>(The TULIP acronym stands for Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints. I am a zero-point Calvinism, by the way).<br><br>And so Phelps' soul-winning focus, muddled as it is by the slime-flecked filth he speaks, would be at odds with Calvinism, which teaches that no amount of evangelism can tilt anyone toward salvation while no behavior, not even Phelps', is awful enough to keep the predestined from it. That makes him different from uber-Calvinist Wilson, who tops Calvin by smirking that "revivalism" is distastefully "sentimental," something he cannot countenance, and who holds in utter disdain the idea of Christian parents evangelizing their children.<br><br>They both say they worship Jesus Christ and they both demonstrate fruit that indicates otherwise.
