Nez Perce came annually prior to Anglo/American settlement to gather and roast camas and to socialize. I need hardly describe what hogs can do rooting around in a field. How handy for the settlers – get rid of the crop that the Nez Perce had relied on for centuries, (read that: get rid of the Nez Perce by depriving them of a subsistence food) and the ground is cultivated for grain/agriculture at the same time. There is still a small patch of blue camas that flowers in the late Spring just south of the Latah Trail to the North of the 7<sup>th</sup> Day Adventist school east of Moscow. Also, in the late spring when driving east out of Moscow on any back road, particularly in the cuts between hills, you can still see small groups of camus blooming.
