Rhonda Bunney has been at the center of an embezzlement investigation at the department that is currently being handled by the Idaho State Police, however, Sheriff’s Lt. Brannon Jordan said he could not comment as to whether that resulted in her termination. County commissioners last year authorized $15,000 to be spent on an outside audit of the department. By law, the audit could only go back five years.</div><div><br></div><div>“It’s two separate things,” said Jordan of Bunney’s firing and the investigation into missing funds. “I can’t link those two together. We’re not allowed to comment on why she was terminated because it’s a personnel matter. ... The investigation into the missing funds continues.”</div><div><br></div><div>ISP Capt. Lonnie Richardson earlier this week said his department will likely wrap up its investigation in the next two weeks and forward its report to the Bonner County Prosecutor’s Office, which is handling filing of potential criminal charges.</div><div><br></div><div>Bunney had been on administrative leave since Nov. 2. Jordan said commissioners will likely need to file a notice of separation during their meetings next week.
