<DIV>A 26-year employee with the <SPAN id=misspell-4 class=mark>Latah</SPAN> County Sheriff’s Office was fired Thursday following the conclusion of an internal investigation.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Lt. Rhonda <SPAN id=misspell-5 class=mark>Bunney</SPAN> has been at the center of an embezzlement investigation at the department that is currently being handled by the Idaho State Police, however, Sheriff’s Lt. Brannon Jordan said he could not comment as to whether that resulted in her termination. County commissioners last year authorized $15,000 to be spent on an outside audit of the department. By law, the audit could only go back five years.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>“It’s two separate things,” said Jordan of <SPAN id=misspell-6 class=mark>Bunney</SPAN>’s firing and the investigation into missing funds. “I can’t link those two together. We’re not allowed to comment on why she was terminated because it’s a personnel matter. ... The investigation into the missing funds continues.”</DIV>

<DIV><SPAN id=misspell-7 class=mark>ISP</SPAN> Capt. Lonnie Richardson earlier this week said his department will likely wrap up its investigation in the next two weeks and forward its report to the Bonner County Prosecutor’s Office, which is handling filing of potential criminal charges.</DIV>

<DIV><SPAN id=misspell-8 class=mark>Bunney</SPAN> had been on administrative leave since Nov. 2. Jordan said commissioners will likely need to file a notice of separation during their meetings next week. He added <SPAN id=misspell-9 class=mark>Bunney</SPAN> can recover monetary compensation for unused vacation time.</DIV>
