I picked pears in the orchards of the Rogue River Valley for two summers in the late 1950s. My workmates were Mexicans on the Bracero Program. I was the only illegal on the job. I was big for my age but I was only 14. One day I picked 150 boxes and I remember the temperature was 115 degrees. At 15 cents per box that was a very good day's work.<BR>

I learned a good work ethic from depression era parents, who were some of the first composters and recyclers in Medford, Oregon.<BR>

In 1968, my dad was administrator of Crestview Terrace Nursing Home. He<BR>
gave me a job in the laundry, mangling cotton sheets for a whole 25 cents<BR>
an hour! It was wicked, hot work, but at least I had a radio. I worked<BR>
about 4 hours a day. To this day, my favorite Stephen King story, is The<BR>
Mangler. *laugh*<BR>

The next year, he purchased Paradise Villa Nursing Home, now Aspen Park...<BR>
The summer of 1969, I had the thrill of washing windows, inside and out.<BR>
What I remember the most about washing those windows, was as soon as they<BR>
were done, it would rain. Just a touch of rain, and a puff of dust, to muck<BR>
up my hard work... and it was start all over again!<BR>
The next year, I graduated to housekeeper. Boy, did the promotion puff my<BR>
head! My second week, my prideful bubble was burst, when after bragging to<BR>
Dad how I'd cleaned 10 rooms before noon. He said "Daughter, everyone of<BR>
these people is some body's grandma, grandpa, sister, brother. This is<BR>
their home now. You are not to rush in and out of rooms, but visit with<BR>
each person, as if they were your grandma, or grandpa." It was then I<BR>
realized how horrible it must be to live in a small room for the rest of<BR>
one's life... I made so many friends, and to this day, am enthralled when<BR>
elders recite their history.<BR>

By 9th grade, I was promoted to laundry assistant, working under Bernice<BR>
Foster. The laundry was a humbling experience. Half my paycheck went into<BR>
the bank, the other half was spent at Myklebusts on clothing. For the<BR>
fruits of my labor, I was voted "Best Dressed" at MJHS.<BR>
<BR>
All of my siblings worked in the nursing home. So our employees could be<BR>
with their family, we worked holidays, and weekends... we worked wherever<BR>
we were needed when a department was short of help.<BR>
<BR>
Dad taught us a work ethic, passed from the four of us, to his 13<BR>
grandchildren, and four great-granddaughters.<BR>
<BR>
Yep, dad broke labor laws, and I am glad he did. None of us would be who we<BR>
are today, had it not been for lessons learned in the halls of Paradise<BR>
Villa.<BR>
