Wayne,
You had better check federal law regarding copyright. Your "free use" statement is clearly that of someone who has no knowledge of copyright law and obviously does not rely on income from copyright protected works to help pay the bills.
I believe you are mistaking "free use" with "fair use", which allows the usage of works without payment or authorization only in a narrowly defined manner. You can find more about Fair Use on the WSU website here:
http://publishing.wsu.edu/copyright/fair_use/

I can absolutely guarantee you that the usage of Bouma's image on that postcard was NOT fair use. It does not meet ANY of the criteria for it. I hope that the person or persons who used it is found and the copyright owner of the image nails their ass or asses to the wall.

It is attitudes toward copyright like yours that takes money out of the wallets of hardworking "creatives" every single day. It is an issue I have to confront, on average, two or three times per year. In fact, you may remember a little issue I had with Moscow's current mayor regarding copyright, which also did not meet the criteria for Fair Use. Not surprisingly, there wasn't any outcry from the "Moscow clique" about the theft of that image. Infringement is a major problem facing those of us who create things. Do you think my photographic equipment is cheap? I could have taken a week long trip to London for what I paid for one lens. What about the time and effort I've put into learning my craft? Worthless to you maybe, but remember that the next time you look at a photo by anyone and say "Wow".

For a town that prides itself for its artistic community, Moscow has an above average blase' attitude when it comes to copyright infringement. Would you walk into that photographer's booth at the farmer's market and just take a print without paying for it? That is EXACTLY what you are doing when you take something off the web that isn't listed as public domain or creative commons.

Just in case you think that I only shoot "news", I'll point out that I am represented by Getty Images for stock photos and that while I couldn't get the time of day from galleries in Moscow, I've been approached by galleries in Boston, Philadelphia and Miami to show my work. I'll revist putting together a show once I've settled in on the east coast
