Crews will be moving around the neighborhoods in vehicles with flashing lights. To contact the flushing crew directly, please call the Whitcom Dispatch Center at 509-332-2521.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'>Periodic flushing of the water distribution system is a vital part of the operation and maintenance function of any public water system, as well as meeting state regulatory requirements. Because our available well water is high in iron and manganese (even though some wells are filtered) the iron and manganese reacts with the added chlorine to create a “floc” (reddish colored fluffy particles) that will settle in the piping system during normal flow condition and be re-suspended during high flow periods. This re-suspended floc or sediment results in red or dirty water. Thorough flushing removes the majority of this sediment from the piping systems thereby improving overall water quality.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><o:p> </o:p></p><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";mso-fareast-language:EN-US'><br clear=all style='page-break-before:always'></span><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'>If you experience water discoloration, you are advised to run your cold water for 10 minutes, or until it remains clear. If your water remains discolored, please call the water department as this may require additional localized flushing. Residents are also advised not to do laundry until the water is clear. It is also normal for the water to have a slight metallic taste for several days after the flushing is complete. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'>We thank you for your patience during this routine maintenance process that is necessary to ensure that we can continue to supply quality drinking water to our many customers.
