uniform is trying to gauge how a repeal of the “don’t ask,

social life.
The survey was sent to 150,000 spouses and presented as an
“important, confidential survey that will help shape the future of our
military,” according to the cover letter, dated Aug. 11 and signed by
Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The 44-question survey, a copy of which was obtained by
Military Times, follows an earlier effort targeting 450,000 active-duty and
reserve-component troops and is part of the Pentagon’s broader effort to
gauge the potential impact of repealing the law that bars open military service
by gays and the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t
tell” policy that derives from the law.

■ Do you have any family members, friends or
acquaintances, including coworkers, whom you believe to be gay or lesbian?
■ Has your spouse ever worked on a daily basis with an
individual he or she believed to be a homosexual service member? [If so,] how

■ Assume “don’t ask, don’t

The survey also asks spouses to disclose their age, race,
