Police have noticed an increase in the number of people that are enjoying the
warmer weather by biking and commuting around town by bicycle. We would like
to remind all riders of some of the important rules of the road that are in place
to keep them and everyone else safe. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'>One of the most important things for everyone to remember is to be courteous,
have patience and use due care. For example, a bicycle rider demonstrates due
care when they are predictable to other vehicles by not driving out into
traffic, off sidewalks or crossing streets without allowing enough time and
distance for vehicles on the roadway to slow down or stop. Also, the use of hand
signals allows those traveling around you to know what your intentions are. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><o:p> </o:p></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'>Please remember by Idaho Code 49-717, when traveling in the roadway,
you are considered a vehicle, if you can not keep up with the flow of traffic
then please ride close to the right side of the lane allowing others to safely
pass you. When in the roadway, including bike lanes, bicyclists may not ride
against traffic. If you are traveling on the sidewalk you are considered a
pedestrian (Idaho Code 49-721) but are required to yield the right of way to
the pedestrians on the sidewalk. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><o:p> </o:p></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:
12.0pt'>All bike riders riding any time from sunset to sunrise and at any other
time when there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons
and vehicles at a distance of five hundred (500) feet ahead shall display a
bike light from the front. The bike light can be either attached to the rider
or the bicycle. All riders must also have a reflector visible from the rear of
the bicycle. Bike lights are required for all bicycles, even on the sidewalk.
