I've never done meth, so I have no empirical experience in how many times I could use it without becoming an addict. And I do think that meth addiction inevitably leads to the kind of soul-crushing, degrading, "whoring" lifestyle Donald describes.

I do have empirical experience in caring deeply for people whose lives have been shot to hell because of meth use. The nature of addiction is that every person's physiology is different, and "just once" for some people might be enough. Others might not get hooked until a few tries. But let's acknowledge that most meth usage doesn't occur in carefully-controlled clinical settings where not only frequency of use, but also purity and safety, are monitored. Further, accompanying behaviors -- abuse of alcohol and other drugs, sexual promiscuity, poor nutrition, poverty -- can contribute to the ease with which street drugs contribute to overall poor health and physical weakness. In other words, there undoubtedly exist in this world -- even in Moscow -- those who have tried meth just once and then continued with productive, drug-free lives. Most of the time, that's not the case.

I'm not in favor of every scattershot approach to drug-abuse prevention. I don't, for example, like the DARE program at all. But the Meth Project and its accompanying billboards, as well as the painted "Not Even Once" sign I drive by at least daily, are important contributions to fighting a very serious problem. An important contribution to the exacerbation of that problem is pretending it doesn't exist.

Keely
www.keely-prevailingwinds.com

From: donaledwards@hotmail.com
To: vision2020@moscow.com
Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2010 09:23:22 -0700
Subject: Re: [Vision2020] a meth problem in Moscow? I don't believe the question was whether meth exists in Moscow but if the state "Meth Projects" actually work. I think they have proven to be a costly waste of time and resource but the sum total of my knowledge would consist of personal opinion and a single documentary viewed on Netflix instant play titled "American Meth" that interviews the director of Montana's program along with teenagers and their views of the billboards.

Do you feel the sensationist billboards and tv ads portray an honest account of the average users experience? If "Not Even Once" means a kid tries it and doesn't whore themself out the next day do you suppose they will feel they were lied to or they must be stronger than meth so it must be ok to dabble with it on weekends?
Reading chronologically
> gets me every time).
>
> If Nancy Chaney said that Moscow does not have a meth problem, I would be dismayed beyond measure. Having spent an enormous amount of time working with a meth addict and a few of her friends in the Moscow area over the last five or six years, it's clear to me that Moscow proper and the outlying rural areas is choking with a meth problem.
>
> Our friend Shannon, now deceased, was addicted. Her husband, also a dear friend, was the biggest meth dealer on the Palouse and is now serving prison time because of it. Her daughter has had a terrible time escaping its clutches, as have other friends of Shannon's. I organized her funeral in March 2009; some 75 people, many of whom were meth users, showed up to honor her memory, and I have heard of a successful, long-lasting recovery for only one or two of them. I know another family dealing with methamphetamine use and remember how heartsick I was when I found out that an elementary school classmate of my son's -- right here in Moscow -- had to be taken from her home because of one parent's addiction. The Celebrate Recovery program at Bridge Bible Church appears to be growing, as well; many of its clients are meth-affected.
>
> Of course, many of our neighbors, both on the Right and on the Left, also don't think Moscow has an HIV problem, a domestic violence problem, or a hunger problem. Some on the Christian Right locally have made it clear none of those things -- IF they existed -- would be of any particular concern to them, and that's shameful. But my experience with some on the Left has lead me to see an insularity that fosters the notion that since none of their acquaintances use meth, or get the shit beaten out of them by their husbands, or go to bed hungry, or live with undiagnosed HIV, it must not be a problem. That's just as shameful, and I would be surprised if, in fact, Mayor Chaney thought meth wasn't an issue in her town.
>
> It saddens me greatly that I know otherwise.
>
> Keely
> www.keely-prevailingwinds.com
>
>
>
>
> From: 1000acres@gmail.com
> To: thansen@moscow.com; vision2020@moscow.com
> Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2010 14:40:45 -0700
> Subject: Re: [Vision2020] Two Questions . . .
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> I heard that Mayor Chaney said Moscow does not have a meth
> problem, so chose not to participate.
>
>
>
> bj
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> From: Tom Hansen
> [mailto:thansen@moscow.com]
>
> Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 2:35 PM
>
> To: '1000Acres'; 'Moscow Vision 2020'
>
> Cc: BJ Swanson
>
> Subject: RE: [Vision2020] Two Questions . . .
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> BJ ?
>
>
>
> Is there any reason why the city of Moscow may have chosen NOT
> to participate in such a positive-oriented program?
>
>
>
> Tom Hansen
>
> Moscow, Idaho
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> From: 1000Acres
> [mailto:1000acres@gmail.com]
>
> Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 2:31 PM
>
> To: 'Tom Hansen'; 'Moscow Vision 2020'
>
> Subject: RE: [Vision2020] Two Questions . . .
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> Tom,
>
>
>
> These were done by the Gritman Junior Volunteers.
