your concerns with the Upper Lochsa Land Exchange. I appreciate
hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.</blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite>The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and
Western Pacific Timber are in the process of considering a land
exchange where Western Pacific Timber would exchange 39,371 acres of
checkerboard land near Powell and Lolo Pass for 28,212 acres of
national forestland located in Clearwater, Idaho and Latah
Counties.</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite> </blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>The (USFS) is in the midst of the
environmental review process for the exchange. Public scoping began in
November 2008, and during this time, public open-house meetings were
held in Moscow, Elk River and Elk City. The USFS received 120 comment
letters from agencies, conservation groups and private individuals.
This first round of public scoping ended on January 5,
2009.</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite> </blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>The USFS expects that the draft
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be published for public
review by October 2009, and has anticipated that the final EIS will be
completed in June 2010. The draft EIS will prompt another 45 day
comment period during which time you may wish to make your comments
known to the USFS. Additional public scoping meetings are also planned
at that time to gather community feedback.</blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite>Thank you for sharing your comments with
me. While the land exchange process is currently being carried out
exclusively at the agency level, I am closely following the process.
In the meantime, I would encourage you to continue to voice your
concerns through the opportunities made available to you through the
USFS and Western Pacific Timber.</blockquote>
