I've come to realize that the times that I find myself absently scratching my cheek or forehead while contemplating the great mysteries of life, I almost invariably use my middle finger. It's longer, which makes it easier to reach those hard to reach places, and, being the middle, or center finger, is the more moderate of all the digits, leaning neither left or right, hence lending a reasoned, well thought out scratch.
