Thank you, Keely. Your response sounds more in line with my limited knowledge of the Catholic faith. Over the years I, too, have known Catholics that have looked to other denominations, hoping that God would be more understanding than their parish priest.

"Wiggle room" was probably not the best choice of words, but. . . .heck. . . it's Ellen, you know, and sometimes things just slip out and I say it like I see it.

This will be my last post on this subject, however, because I do not wish to be dragged into a religious debate. . . especially with someone I feel is a fraud. I have noticed a change in spelling, grammer, punctuation and cadence in the contributions of "Donovan" since last summer. I think I was among the first to notice this change because I called him on it, telling him to "fess up" sometime last year. And after the barrage last month, I am even more firmly convinced. . . this is not "Donovan".
Of course, one of the "dogmas" of the Roman Catholic Church is belief in papal infallibility, and that infallible Pope sets out doctrine for the faithful, who then must, to honor Catholic "dogma" -- let's call it doctrinal tradition -- abide by his pronouncements. I don't question that most do not, but it's incorrect to say that in matters of church teaching, the Pope considers dissenters from his revealed doctrine to be faithful Catholics.

God is probably more flexible, but the Catholic church claims its origin to the Apostle Peter, the "rock" on whom Christ built his church, and what Yahweh likely allows is often prohibited by the Pope. Catholics may do well to abide by Spirit-guided conscience, but the individual communicant has to decide if she can reconcile being a faithful Christian with complete adherence to Papal authority. I couldn't, which is why I left the Roman Catholic Church 27 years ago. I know many, many sincere Christians who are practicing Roman Catholics, but I believed then, and do now, that I could not be.

Keely

Ellen,

Most Catholics in the United States believe in birth control. Second, where did you hear that there is no "wiggle" room in having to believe everything the Pope says and still be Catholic?

I know of no Catholics that believe everything the Catholic Church preaches, including nuns and priests? The only thing Catholics are required to believe is the Dogma of the Church.
