At the Biblical feminism conference I attended last year, one of the most impressive women I met was the Rev. Joanne Lyons, a Wesleyan pastor who began her life of service working with a number of "radical" outreach groups, the Panthers among them. She became a Christian and repudiated any violence, hate, and sexism the group manifested, but lamented the fact that in a "Christian" nation, there was a need for feeding programs for the poor, after-school centers for kids, and protection for elderly folks in their neighborhood, among other problems, that the Church seemed quite content to ignore.

Keely

> To: pkraut@moscow.com; vision2020@mail-gw.fsr.net
> From: thansen@moscow.com
> Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 22:56:19 +0000
> Subject: Re: [Vision2020] Barack Obama's Unity Speech Today in Philadelphia
>
> You really ought to check out the history of the Black Panthers, Pat.
