<div>What I find astonishing is that no one from the U of I English Dept., featuring some of the most skilled writers in our area, is on this contact list regarding the open Daily News columnist offer. Many in that department can write circles around most everyone on that list, no offence meant. After all, good writing, as an end in itself, is what they do! And many of them are not exactly of the religious or political orientation of Iverson, to put it politely. They could pen Daily News columns that would stun! What about Robert Wrigley, Kim Barnes, Mary Clearman Blew, Ronald McFarland, Joy Passanante, all well published and beautiful writers? </div>

<p style="MARGIN-TOP: 0px; FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-SIZE: 14px; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0px">There's plenty for potential columnists to work with </p> <br>The editorial page of a daily newspaper can be a lively place, and ours is no different.<br>
With all the issues on the plate of public discourse, there never seems to be a shortage of things to talk about. When you branch beyond the boundary of the Palouse, the two legislatures can provide ample fodder for commentary, a presidential election cycle always makes for opinions galore, and the current administration - it could be said - has generated a thought or two from those who might not see eye to eye with their policies.<br>
<br>And there's always Larry Craig if it's a really slow day for opinions.<br>There aren't too many slow days.<br> <br>That makes this a perfect time for someone who wants to join the Daily News' roster of regular columnists.<br>
There are occasional changes in the editorial lineup, and this is such a time. Judith Brown has concluded her tour as a columnist with a plan to run for public office. We're shifting our "Reality-Based Lefty," Chuck Pezeshki from his spot every other Tuesday into every other weekend edition. <br>
<br>That opens up a Tuesday spot for another columnist on the opinion page. <br> <br>Our current crew of columnists cover an array of topics and generate plenty of community feedback through letters to the editor and comments section of DNews.com.<br>
<br>For those who want to become regular contributors on the Op/Ed page, here's how you go about applying. Prepare two or three sample columns of 700 words or less. <br> <br>We prefer those who can offer commentary on local issues, but everything is up for grabs. <br>
Once you've put together a couple of 700-word columns, submit those samples and a cover letter of introduction to my attention at the either the Moscow or Pullman office of the Daily News. Or you can submit your material via e-mail to the address listed at the end of this column. <br>
<br>And no newspaper query would be complete without a deadline because, well, everything with newspapers has a deadline.
