When I was teaching a course colloquially known as "Bulldozed America"
[conservation of
natural resources] at San Fernando Valley State College [now Cal State
Northridge],
in 1969, before the first Earth Day, it was BRICKS that were advocated
for displacement
of water in the water closet of the toilet, not rocks. Maybe it was
because (red) bricks
had a convenient size, stacked more neatly, and were readily
purchasable in suburban
and metro areas?

Anyway, bending the rod downwards, the rod connecting the float and the
ball-cock valve,
is a lot easier than bricks, if you can bend it far enough without it
breaking or interfering with the flush
valve.

Or, instead of putting rocks in your toilet's reservoir, you can simply
adjust the trigger arm (that thingamajig with a big plastic bubble at the
end of it) so that it terminates water refill sooner.
[Either that or leave the Christmas tree up year-round . . . Shorter walk
to the john, you understand.]
It certainly beats putting rocks in your toilet.

I was so impressed with them I bought one for my daughter for her
Christmas present last
year. Made sense to me. . . . she's on a septic system where she lives
and she's
conserving a valuable natural resource with every half-flush. The Natural
Abode is a
great shop with very helpful staff to answer all your questions. Check it
out if you
haven't already.
